SAVE THE DATES!

Here's just a quick flash--->forward to events later this semester.
Pitt circle K doesn't work by themselves as a group all the time, Sometimes we work with circle k members all around Pa. Some major meetings/events that are coming up include:

9/27- Allegheny Division Officer Council Meeting- Greensburg, PA
10/23-24- IUP's Gobble Gobble (LSSP)- Indiana, PA
11/13-15- Interpack- Hidden Valley, P

So save those dates and get PUMPED for SERVICE!!

What's up with Summer

Hey Everyone! Some people think that just because it's summer, It is time to just relax and do nothing. Well not for Pitt Oakland circle K members. Let's just take our President of Services, Courtney Matisko for example. To get a clear picture, I asked her to explain what exactly she did. Courtney said, This summer I am working on making action packs for Christians in Pakistan. Christianity isn't the dominant (or even an accepted) form of religion, so Christians are pursecuted for showing their beliefs in a public setting. Because of this, most go into hiding to prevent from being arrested by the government and killed. Action packs are big bags that are filled with blankets, clothing, soap, etc. for the families that are in hiding in Pakistan. The packs are filled by the public and then shipped to a loading site where helicoptors fly over Pakistan and air drop them to the families in need. I have been making home-made blankets for my action packs and using other store-bought items. I also volunteer for a 12-hour monthly event at a local soup kitchen helping to pass out food to homeless/needy people in my area. This soup kitchen event is held by my church, which also owns its own second-hand store (like a goodwill, but everything is free) where people can come in and find things that they need, but don't have."
She's not the only one whose been servicing this summer! Our very own President of Pitt Oakland circle K Alex Hirschberg. He said, "What i basically do is volunteer for a rescue squad once a week for 10.5 hours and once every three weekends for the same amount of time. So when people in my town call 9-1-1 I help treat them/ take them to the hospital. etc."

Way to go Guys!

HOW TO GET INVOLVED!!!
Courtney and Alex are only two members of our club who are dedicated to servicing! If you want to get involved with service projects or become a member of PITT OAKLAND Circle K, then e-mail me the Editor (Whitney) at wds8pitt.edu. Our meetings are Tuesday nights at 9. A place and time has not been decided yet.

End of the year!

Hey Everyone! The end of the year is near. Pitt-O is on its last week of classes and more week of finals after that. But just because we are done at PITT, does NOT mean we are done with SERVICE. During finals week you can contact our former- president Justin Aaron about some awesome service opportunity. Also, if your in the area this summer, every Thursday head on over to the childrens' institute for BINGO! AND Earth/Arbor Day Celebration is Monday 4/20 – Friday 4/24.

While at home, email your service hours to Lisa Boudemen so she can keep track of your success. Have a wonderful summer and keep up the good work PITT- O
And the same goes for all you other Circle-Kers!
Quick reminder for all you new officers. SPOT is Sunday April 26th.
See all of your smiling faces and get ready for the new year.

Be careful, your picture could be caught on PITT-O's picture of the month. Keep checking to see if your smiling face is posted. :)

Spring Break Service

Manage to be more constructive than me over spring break? (It wouldn't take much...I spent most of mine on the couch watching Bravo.) If you did any kind of volunteer work, let Secretary Jaclyn know so she can give you credit! Tell her at our meeting tomorrow, or email her at jbrucker@pitt.edu

Announcing the new DSP!

All year our club has been focusing on "Going Green." Why? Not because it's the latest trend or simply because it's a good thing to do (although those are good reasons too) but because it was the Pennsylvania District Service Project. Each year the district picks a different cause to center around.
Recently the 2009-2010 project was selected, thanks to everyone who voted on pacircle.org. Here's a summary of the new focus, courtesy of the district website.

Helping the Homeless puts an emphasis on the problem of homelessness in our communities. This is becoming increasingly more important as the economic times continue to prove difficult for many people. There are also tons of projects that can be done to work towards this DSP including: assisting at homeless shelters and soup kitchens, holding supply drives, and doing adopt-a-family activities around the holidays.

We'll be getting lots more information about Helping the Homeless at District Convention, so stay tuned!

District Convention

Looks like fun, right? Well catch your own glimpse of District Convention this year and join the club as we venture to Erie, PA March 27-29.
The weekend will be packed with service and leadership events, as well as the opportunity to meet people from all over the state. Expect the usual crazy shenanigans that Pitt-Oakland gets itself into...
We'll be giving you more details about DCON at upcoming meetings, so stay tuned! This is NOT a weekend you want to miss!
